Don’t choose a solo only because you feel like you are “supposed” to transcribe that solo or player. Transcribe solos you love and want to emulate. Plus, if you are able to tolerate listening to it that many times, you must really love the solo. This level of familiarity will help you be able to transcribe the solo faster and retain the information better. ![]() This doesn’t mean you need to be an amazing vocalist or have 100% pitch accuracy, but do the best you can. When you know it well, no sections or notes should sound surprising. Back to transcribing a solo yourself… Step 1: Listen to the solo, a LOT of timesīecome incredibly familiar with the solo. This was Braswell's first ever jazz competition!)įast forward to this past weekend, I was invited to perform along with the amazing students at Braswell, It was such a great time hearing the band play on the "big stage" as well as sitting in with them to play a solo! (The second jazz band also won first place for second band. Aaron Snipes has been doing a ridiculously good job teaching these students and I have been a happy addition to the program! So at the end of last school year, Braswell Legacy One went to the UTA Jazz Festival and won grand champion. I taught all of the saxophonists in the top jazz ensemble and a few other members, weekly jazz style and section playing masterclasses with the sax sections, as well as directed a jazz combo of the top students where I arranged all of the music. I started working with Braswell last school year. I also want to give a huge thank you to Aaron snipes, Director of Bands at Braswell High School for inviting me out to perform with his jazz band this weekend.īraswell Legacy One did their exhibition performance at the 49th Annual University of Texas at Arlington Jazz Festival. I am really excited for Dominique and look forward to his musical journal which is sure to be fruitful. In the fall, Dominique is going to attend Oklahoma State University to study under Dr. ![]() He was also first tenor in the All-Region Jazz band and was ranked 12th in the state of Texas. Dominique attends one of my schools with no jazz, so he sought out jazz! He worked really hard and auditioned for a local jazz honor band that meets every week for the entire school year! Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Jazz Band! He rode around thirty minutes every Sunday to participate and get a jazz big band education.ĭominique did his final performance at the Moody Performance Hall at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas! He has been playing first tenor (which is a main improvisational soloist!). I have a special student named Dominique. (In fact, most high schools in this area don’t have jazz!). Surprisingly, North Dallas doesn’t have a jazz program in all the high schools.
